UMI’s ‘People Stories’ Debut: An Immersive Album Experience Filled with Heart, Soul, and Community at the Peppermint Club

UMI might have something special with her debut project, 'people stories,' under Epic Records.

On Thursday night at the Peppermint Club, R&B singer-songwriter and meditative practitioner UMI transformed the space into a soulful sanctuary. Fans were treated with an immersive album release party, “U+MI - PEOPLE STORIES,” where anticipation filled the air and everyone had a signature drink in hand. Guests enjoyed an exclusive first listen of her album before its August 22 release, got a chance to stepp into the spotlight for an open mic, and danced the night away. The night reached a new high during the open mic when a fan delivered a heartfelt spoken word poem to his girlfriend, moving the crowd and inspiring UMI for a new tack I hope we get for a follow up album.

UMI is radiating gratitude, making the evening a celebration of connection and creativity—a warm, jazz-infused night that blended with the electric energy of a dance club and cut through Los Angeles’s usual hoopla. A true breath of fresh air.

At the event, UMI glowed with confidence, thriving alongside her enthusiastic team. The new music’s energy matched her seamlessly in the moment and mirroring her whimsical artistry and soulful vibe. The audience grooved to the retro Janet Jackson-esque "HARD TRUTHS" with 6LACK, but the magic grew as she played tracks like "Rain Rain," an airy, banjo-and-808s R&B reverie, and "Mango Sticky Rice," inspired by a chance night out with two fans as they told her their love story.

This time around, UMI’s album feels more attuned, carefully shaped by a new found introspection of seeing herself in everyone she has encountered and guided by her therapist’s narrations. "people stories" spans 15 tracks and 44 minutes, weaving tales from fans, family, and her journey—a dreamy, enchanting R&B blend.

I’ve always admired UMI’s artistry, but “people stories” feels like her breakout—the launch into the stardom she deserves. I’m excited to dive into this new era of her.
